Are You A Helper of Allah? | Lecture by Dr. Omar Suleiman

When the test came, the Sahabah didn’t hesitate. Neither did the disciples of Isa (AS). Their devotion wasn’t just words, it was action, sacrifice, and faith. Are we even close to their level of devotion? While we can never be Sahabah, we can discover what it truly means to embody the spirit of those who showed utmost devotion.

The Timelessness Of The Prophet (ﷺ) Truly subhanAllah, the timelessness of the message of the Prophet (ﷺ),
that even the du'as that he was making, like you think about someone's concerns and priorities 1400 years ago, the fact that they're still relevant is incredible, right?
So the timelessness of everything about the Prophet (ﷺ), his grand message to his most intimate prayers, being just as relevant today to us as they were
to the people that were immediately around him (ﷺ). And that is nothing but a miracle from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. But we want to talk about that generation that was actually around him (ﷺ),
and frame it in a Qur'anic discourse. Al-Qadi Iyad (رحمه الله تعالى) said if the only miracle the Prophet (ﷺ) has is his companions, then that's enough of a miracle.
Like if there was nothing else but the fact that he took that group of people and made them what he made them (ﷺ), by the grace of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, that's enough of a miracle.
Who are these people that in just two decades, some of them spent less than a decade with the Prophet (ﷺ), flipped and became who they became and changed the face of the world altogether.
Who are these people and who's the man (ﷺ) that manufactured these people? You see when Mus'ab (رضي الله تعالى عنه) showed up in Madinah, the people of Madinah fell in love with the Prophet (ﷺ) before they met him because they said
if this is what he manufactures, then we know that the one behind him, right, is even greater. Likewise, the companions serve as a miracle, as a proof, just like the Ansar went out to
Quba, in the trees awaiting to meet the Prophet (ﷺ) and to meet those Muhajireen that they'd never seen before but they'd heard of.
We too have that same love and anticipation for the entire generation of companions, of the sahaba, who surrounded the Prophet (ﷺ) and who spread his light throughout
the world and we are a product of their efforts and so we don't long from the trees of Quba but we long to be in the trees of paradise and waiting for our moment, bi idhnillahi ta'ala,
to meet the Prophet (ﷺ) and his blessed family and his noble companions But there's something else.
There's something very beautiful about how the Qur'an frames this discourse of being helpers of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. Yes, first and foremost, the idea of how can you be a helper of Allah? Allah doesn't need help.
Divine aid is absolute. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala can overcome, can overpower, can change what He created without needing you or I in the equation. Kun fayakun, be and it is.
If everyone forsakes their responsibility, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala can send seen birds to destroy an army of elephants and Allah Azza wa Jal doesn't need you to even see the birds.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala can send angels with wings that are far more impressive than those birds to do what even those birds could not do and you never needed to see it. But Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala made it happen and Allah Azza wa Jal could do it even without
the angels. So first and foremost, it's a blessing to be included in divine equation, but you are not necessary for divine execution.
It's a blessing when Allah Azza wa Jal allows you to be a part of the process, but you're not needed for the process. And so we take that as a ni'mah, Ya Allah, how can I be from Ansarullah? How can I be from the helpers of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala?
How do I get included? Not because You need me for this to happen, but because I know it's an honor to be included.
And there's something deeply profound and beautiful about how this conversation happens
in the most human episode where you find Isa (عليه السلام) in his last mention in the Qur'an.
SubhanAllah, how miraculous and coherent and beautiful the Qur'an is and how many moments there are for tadabbur, for contemplation. Allah first tells us the story of Isa (عليه السلام), if you're reading Qur'an cover to cover, remember
there are miracles in the chronological descent of the ayat and then there are miracles in the order of the ayat. There are two separate sets of miracles.
They're both divinely put together and structured and there are endless opportunities for tadabbur, to think and contemplate. So the story of Isa (عليه السلام) begins if you're reading the Qur'an cover to cover,
it actually begins in Surah Ali 'Imran, right? It goes back to Imran and then the wife of Imran and then Maryam and then Isa (عليه السلام). Right? Peace be upon them all.
It tells us the story in that way. And if you're reading the Qur'an cover to cover, the last mention of Isa (عليه السلام) is on the second page of Surah As-Saf where he does two things. He gives the bushra, he gives the glad tidings of the Prophet (ﷺ)
to come.
[As-Saf 61:6] This is the top of that page. That I have been sent to you as a messenger with proofs confirmed with the Torah and prophesying
and confirming a prophet to come after me named Ahmad. So he's giving the final message that there's a prophet that's coming and this is something
that Isa (عليه السلام) shared with his followers who were grieved and saddened with the news of his imminent departure from them. But don't worry, there's someone coming after me and the traces of which are still found
in the Bible today of the Paraclete, the Comforter, the Confirmer, the one who will continue what I have and will do it in a way that is even more complete and more perfect and more blessed
than what I brought. He'll extend that light. Don't worry, it's not ending here. The end of the story is not here. You might not live to see it but you're not living for yourselves. You're living for an unseen reward and an unseen result.
It's okay, it'll happen and it's coming. I don't know when but it is coming and I can confirm to you that he is coming. So the top of the page is that.
The last mention of Isa (عليه السلام) when you're reading the Qur'an cover to cover is the last verse وَإِذْ قَالَ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ يَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
O you who believe, be helpers of Allah like Isa (عليه السلام) when he spoke to the disciples and he said مَنْ أَنصَارِي إِلَى اللَّهِ Who will help me in this mission that's been bestowed upon me by Allah?
The disciples said we are the helpers of Allah. We will be there with you O Isa, we will continue your work O Isa.
And Allah Azza wa Jal says So a group of Bani Israel believed and a group from Bani Israel disbelieved and We gave victory
to those who believed over those who disbelieved. They ended with clear victory, with a clear victory. So much to unpack in this ayah. SubhanAllah the story of Jesus (عليه السلام)
Both again if you read the Qur'an cover to cover as well as if you study the chronological descent of ayat. It's his final conversations. Here Isa (عليه السلام) saying goodbye.
There's a prophet coming after me. And also who will be my true Ansar? Who's going to stand up and rise to the occasion in my darkest and deepest moments of despair?
Which is when they are gathered outside his home ready to try to crucify him. They've plotted against him from inside and outside. The Prophet (ﷺ) had Bani Qurayza from the inside of the trench. He had Quraysh from the outside of the trench.
Isa (عليه السلام) had the plotting from his own from Bani Israel As well as the plotting of the Romans against him. The plot is squeezing and tightening on him. And he's talking to his few companions, his few disciples.
The Prophet (ﷺ) is in the trench with the Ansar. Covered in dirt. They're facing a genocide and they're facing betrayal from their own.
And they are chanting support for the Prophet (ﷺ). Encouraged with no food in their stomachs. And the Prophet (ﷺ) looks at them.
And he smiles without a single part of his skin not covered in dirt in mud. And he says Oh Allah there is no life except for the life of the hereafter.
Forgive the Ansar and the Muhajirah those that came with me from Mecca. How beautiful these tightening moments when you can still have that perspective and that clarity. There was a handful around Isa (عليه السلام).
His Ansar that had that clarity. They weren't all bad. There was always the righteous from Bani Israel. And then there was the wicked, right?
Proportionally towards the end the righteous is a small group. And the wicked are a large group. And by the way such is the case of Ummah Muhammad (ﷺ) as well.
That proportionally towards the end time the group of righteous shrinks. May Allah make us amongst them. And the group of wicked useless foam grows. May Allah protect us from being amongst them.
So this is how divine equation always goes with the Prophet and with his followers. So you have Isa (عليه السلام) in the home surrounded by the soldiers. With his companions in that last conversation.
You have Muhammad (ﷺ) surrounded from all directions in the ditch with his Ansar. This is where true followers show themselves. This is where integrity shines. This is where courage shines.
This is where sincerity is proven in those types of moments. There are those that are truthful to the covenant they took with Allah.
Some of them are tested in the moment. Some of them they have to wait to prove it. But their resolve is there. I don't need you to answer this question for me.
But answer it to yourself. In the last two years how many times have you mentally put yourself in Gaza? Emotionally mentally put yourself in Gaza and ask yourself the question
What would I do right now? What would I do if I was starving? If every single person that was beloved to me was killed? If I was missing some limbs? If I was being psychologically tortured?
If for two years SubhanAllah just hearing that drone in the background that buzz That they get no respite from. And being moved from the north to the south to the center to the north to the south to the center.
And no structure to settle in. What would I do? If after all of that for two years I was told just leave.
Allahumma sta'an. You got to put yourself there mentally and emotionally and spiritually. Even if you were never there physically. Okay.
Are you truthful to Allah with what you've said to yourself on the inside? There were people that missed Badr. That said Ya Allah if we're ever put in a situation like they were put in Badr You will see us shine and then they shined in Uhud. There were people that missed Badr and Uhud.
They said Ya Allah if we're ever in a situation like that You'll see our hearts and their hearts were proven. In Khandaq. And there were people that were too young and they missed all of that. And their hearts were proven under Bay'atu Ridwan.
In the pledge that they took under the tree. Even though nothing ensued out of that. But they were willing and that was the point. They had the willingness, the sincerity, the steadfastness.
When they took that pledge with the Prophet (ﷺ) under the tree. Said Ya Rasulullah we're with you till the end. It didn't need to actually become the end for Allah Azza wa Jal to testify to their sincerity. Allah Azza wa Jal testified to their sincerity.
Because you were there already spiritually, mentally, emotionally. I didn't need you to be there physically. But you were there already mentally, emotionally, spiritually.
Allah Azza wa Jal wrote for you the reward. I was speaking to one of my best friends who is in prison right now. In an ICE detention center. You may have read about him. I wrote about him, brother Marwan Maroof.
I was speaking with Ustadh Al-Lubna about him. SubhanAllah, brother Marwan is one of the early pioneers Of this generation of American Muslims.
I mean incredible human being in the background. Incredible. And I was talking to him on the phone. And I was telling him, you know, insha'Allah I wanna visit you. But I wanna visit you without the glass. I'm trying to get permission from the chaplain.
Whatever it is to have a contact visit. Because it's dehumanizing when you gotta pick up a phone. And talk to someone behind a glass. And I'm a chaplain and all that stuff. And he simply says, it's okay, Shaykh Omar.
The intention of the believer is better than his deed. Even if it doesn't happen. Came out naturally from him. The niyyah of the believer is sometimes even better than his actual deed. Are you willing? Is your heart in the right place?
Is your mind in the right place? Is your spirituality in the right place? Even if you're physically not in the place. So Isa (عليه السلام) is talking to his followers.
Now the word hawariyun is disciples. Disciples. These words are very intentional. Did the Prophet (ﷺ) have disciples? I'm looking at my clock and it's already running out of time.
So you're gonna have to interact with me, alright. I'm gonna ask you questions and I wanna hear answers. And it's okay, give the best you can. Did the Prophet (ﷺ) have disciples? Yes, who? Oh someone said it.
Who? The Prophet (ﷺ) said لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ حَوَارِيٌّ Every prophet had disciples. Every prophet had a disciple. Meaning a guy that they could count on no matter what.
My hawari is Az-Zubayr. Az-Zubayr (رضي الله تعالى عنه) was the one who, the first person to go and stand in front of the Prophet (ﷺ) in Mecca as a kid.
When he heard that they attacked the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Prophet (ﷺ) is sitting down in peace. And Az-Zubayr (رضي الله تعالى عنه) busts into the room panting, breathing hard and he's got a sword in his hand.
Prophet (ﷺ) says, what are you doing? He said Ya Rasulullah, I heard that you were attacked. Prophet (ﷺ) smiled and he says, what were you going to do? I was going to defend you.
That was it, the heart, the place, no battle actually took place, he didn't actually have to. But he immediately, without hesitation, instinctively rushed to the Prophet (ﷺ).
I'm there, I'm there, if I'm needed I'm there. It's no wonder that Allah Azza wa Jal dressed the angels in the turban of Az-Zubayr on the day of Badr.
That's epic, Jibreel (عليه السلام) and the angels were wearing the turban of Az-Zubayr on the day of Badr. Because he's there, Az-Zubayr is there, where the Prophet (ﷺ) needs him to be, he's there.
No hesitation, he doesn't think about it, he doesn't weigh things out. So the Hawari is someone who, as the ulama mentioned, is khalis, is completely dedicated to the cause.
Like a devotee to the ultimate extent, doesn't make calculations when they're called for Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. They immediately, their sincerity drives them, they're not worried about the obstacles along the way.
That's a Hawari, the Ansar represent that spirit in the broadest sense.
Now, with Isa (عليه السلام), you sometimes have one of the many. And in the case of the Prophet (ﷺ), different sahaba distinguished themselves in different moments.
In Badr, they were all dressed in the turbans of Az-Zubayr, the angels. In Uhud, that's the day of Talha.
And the Prophet (ﷺ) said, Talha and Az-Zubayr are my neighbours in Jannah. One of them had the day of Badr, the other one had the day of Uhud. And how they rose to the occasion, to be alongside the Prophet (ﷺ).
So different companions distinguished themselves in different moments. Likewise with the Hawariyun, we have a blessed group of people around Isa (عليه السلام). But as the majority of the riwayat of tafsir tell us, there was one of the Hawariyun who rose up.
And Isa (عليه السلام) said, who's going to take my place on the cross? And he'll be with me in paradise as a result of that.
The cross in the sense of the crucifixion, not the actual cross, because even that's historically actually not present. But who will be killed in my place?
Who will be killed in my place and will be with me in paradise?
And one of the disciples rises to the occasion and takes that ultimate place of being with the prophet that was sent to him in Jannah.
So even when you have a group, you have individuals that shine in different moments and rise to the occasion in different ways. Collectively, the sahaba were given to the Prophet (ﷺ) as a gift in place of the Hawariyun.
And they were not 12 or 13, they were over a hundred thousand. Over a hundred thousand, right? They were given to the Prophet (ﷺ).
And you better believe there were thousands of people that were looking at the Prophet (ﷺ). And the love that they had for the Prophet (ﷺ). Even though they were not from his qawm, they were not from his people. They came from all over the world.
When the Prophet (ﷺ) made Hajjatul Wada'. When he made his farewell Hajj, a hundred forty four thousand people estimated with him. From all over the world, they don't share with the Prophet (ﷺ)
What Bani Israel shared with Isa (عليه السلام). Or what Quraysh shared with Muhammad (ﷺ). But if the Prophet (ﷺ) said or did anything, they followed, they loved him, they adored him, they were ready to serve.
Here's the thing. In that group, Allah distinguished sets. The Ansar of Rasulullah (ﷺ), they check off two boxes.
They're the Ansar of Allah and Ansar of Rasulullah (ﷺ). They are automatically considered from Ansarullah. Because they put themselves towards the mission, they allocated themselves towards the mission.
They spent, they did, they took in, they received, they put themselves through everything for the moment. But they also had the physical person of Rasulullah (ﷺ) amongst them.
They took him in (ﷺ). It's not the same as what we do. So they have a claim over us. And to love them is an act of worship. To hate them is a sign of hypocrisy.
To love them for how they loved our messenger (ﷺ). To read about them with such adoration, to remember them, to name our kids after them. To try to embody their spirit with the refugees of our days and with the causes of our days.
That's an act of worship. But you know like if you send your loved one to a far off city. And a family takes that person in, takes in your loved one and caters towards. You love those people even though you never met them.
You know, you'll call them, you'll write letters. Jazakum Allahu khayran. Thank you for taking our son, thank you for taking our daughter. Thank you for taking care of those that are so precious to us and doing it with such love and sincerity. Not feeling burdened by them.
They loved the Prophet (ﷺ). They loved the people from Mecca. Ahlan, tafadhalu. Take our homes, take everything. They would prefer them to themselves.
Even if that meant that it was harmful to them. They'd feed them and subhanAllah, like just think about this.
They would feed their guests and they would pretend to be eating with their guests. So that their guests did not feel bad that they were eating the only food in the home. Keep the lights off, put some empty plates in front of us.
Then put the food only on their plates because that's all we have for the night. And Allah testifies to that sincerity. That's love, that's sacrifice.
I don't even want you to feel bad that I'm sacrificing for you. You know when the people of Gaza thank us for solidarity, what? What are you thanking us for?
Thank you for awakening us. Thank you for standing on behalf of the ummah. In front of the ultimate manifestation of colonialism in the 21st century.
Thank you, jazakum Allahu khayran for taking the stand that you're taking. We're just on the outside trying to, we're trying to be with you. We're not doing anything, why are you thanking us? Doesn't make sense.
Jazakum Allahu khayran for what you've done for Islam. For what you've done for the Muslims. For the sacrifices that you have made. For paying that price with everything that's been given to you in this life.
That's the ansar, spirit of the ansar. That they gave it all. Now we, because of where we live and the time period that we are.
We have a different distinction that's afforded to us. You can't receive the Prophet (ﷺ) physically. You can't go back in time and put yourself in Badr or Uhud or Khandaq.
Nor should you necessarily wish that you lived in that time. Because the sahaba would tell the wide-eyed tabi'een that would come up and say How was it and we wish we were with you.
And how blessed are those two eyes that laid themselves on the beloved (ﷺ). And got to be with him. And they would say Miqdad and Hudhayfah, they would say hold on. You guys don't understand.
The majority of people turned their backs. We were afraid, we were starving, we were scared. This wasn't a walk in the park. Like don't wish that you were in a situation that you don't know. If you would have been able to bear or not.
Take what Allah gave you in the time that you're in and the place that you're in. And make the most of that. There's a reason you live in the 21st century. There's a reason you live in the west. There's a reason you live with your set of circumstances.
Take that set of circumstances and turn it into making yourself Ansarullah. The helpers of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. Don't wish to transimpose yourself into a time. That you would not be able to withstand.
Take it for what you have. So when the Prophet (ﷺ) says Those are my beloved ones, those are my brothers, those are my sisters. The sahaba say ya Rasulullah, who?
The Ansar or the Muhajireen? Is it the people of Madinah or the people of Mecca? No, no, أَنْتُمْ أَصْحَابِي, you're all my companions. أَحِبَّائِي, my loved ones.
Those who believed in me and they've never even seen me. Take it. May Allah make us amongst أَحِبَّاب النَّبِيِّ (ﷺ). The beloved ones of the beloved (ﷺ).
Take it, run with it, master it. Become a symbol of it. Lean into it to the greatest extent that you can possibly lean into it. We can't be sahaba. And if we spent Uhud in gold as the Prophet (ﷺ) said.
We would not equal even a handful of what they spent for the cause of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. We can't do what they did. We can't be where they were. We can say spiritually, emotionally, mentally. I hope that if I was there, I would have done what they did. I hope that's the case.
I hope, so much so. I hope that if I was in Badr, I would have been with the Prophet (ﷺ). I hope that if I was in Uhud, I would have been one of those that threw myself on the Prophet (ﷺ). I hope that if I was in Khandaq, I would be shoveling alongside the Prophet (ﷺ).
And not afraid. I hope that's the case. But what activated that. Was the level of faith that they have.
And so if I can get my level of faith to the maximum capacity that I have. Then I can deal with my circumstances accordingly. You know what that looks like?
I can't throw myself on the Prophet (ﷺ) anymore. Because he's not here physically. But I can throw myself around those that he would have thrown himself around (ﷺ).
I can turn towards those people in his ummah that he would have cried for. That he would have run towards. So ya Rasulullah, I've got it. I'll do this, I'll do my part.
That's my contribution to the divine equation of aid. That's number one. Number two. Something very interesting about this ayah. And I'm already out of time, wallahu musta'an.
So I'm going to try to summarize and move quickly insha'Allah. Something very powerful and profound about this ayah. When Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala mentions
We gave victory to the believers over the disbelievers. And so they were clearly victorious. Did the people around Isa (عليه السلام) actually win in that episode? No.
I mean for all purposes. We know that Allah spared Isa (عليه السلام). وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ وَمَا صَلَبُوهُ وَلَٰكِن شُبِّهَ لَهُمْ Allah spared Jesus (عليه السلام) from the crucifixion. Out of His love for Isa (عليه السلام).
But as far as the episode of history is concerned. The Hawariyun became a small community. They thought they killed Isa (عليه السلام).
But they knew something was wrong with this whole picture. So inside of themselves they were like. Did we really crucify him? Did we not? Was that an image? This didn't feel like we actually killed him.
So they didn't know if they actually crucified Isa (عليه السلام) or not. But the pages of history in that moment. In that generation.
Actually did turn in the favor of the oppressors. So how does Allah Azza wa Jal call them? Clear upon victory. All you have to do is look on that same page.
They wish to extinguish the light of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. But Allah preserves His light. Even though they hate it.
The message that remained with a few men. Now sits with over 2 billion of us. We became the fulfillment. Not so fast.
You wanted to end him. You know subhanAllah there was a Christian that was sharing. He said I have to admit. It's something.
That there are people named Isa, Jesus all over the world. Right? Millions and millions and millions of them and they're Muslims. Right? The message remains.
It persevered. But it was fulfilled later on. And that's okay. How did Allah preserve the people of Gaza? How did the Prophet (ﷺ) describe the people of Gaza? The same word.
They are clear. Persistent upon the truth. They're victorious.
They're victorious. They maintain their principles. They maintain their cause. They're persistent. And they're ظَاهِرِينَ. They're victorious.
Because as much as you try to uproot them you can't remove them. And Gaza persists and Gaza survives not for itself. But for al-Aqsa and for the cause of Palestine and the Ummah as a whole.
And so even if in an episode. And in a moment. You don't see victory in the material sense. Know that victory exists in the mission sense.
And then the question becomes for all of us. Do I find myself in that equation of divine aid? Am I going to be one of the reasons why the message persists.
Until Allah Azza wa Jal declares material changes. In the way that He has decreed will inevitably come. And I'll leave you with the last message and I promise insha'Allah ta'ala this will be it.
The last message in this regard is the following. Ustadh Al-Lubna was talking about.
All of these du'as that the Prophet (ﷺ) would make. The removal of grief, the removal of anxiety, the removal of external circumstances. Of cruelty, of debts, of pain, of persecution. All of these things.
Why? So that the Prophet (ﷺ) could feel better. So that the Prophet (ﷺ) could go to sleep at night and say alhamdulillah no enemies today. So that the Prophet (ﷺ) could, you know, simply rest and take a vacation with Aisha
And say we're all done. No. It's not why he was doing this. And so self-help has become a feel-good term for narcissism.
This whole self-help industry is plagued with narcissism. Yes, we should help. ourselves, but for a more noble mission that is beyond ourselves.
Yes, I should want to be the most wholesome version of myself. And I should want to move beyond my own anxiety and my own grief. And want to remove those shackles and I should think about my capacity.
And I should try to pace myself better, but not so I can feel better. So I can be better. كُونُوا أَنصَارَ اللَّهِ, your intention should not be to survive another day.
Your intention should not be just to exist for the sake of existing. And to bear life. Your intention should be to leave something so great, so transformative. That it will find you in the afterlife, bi idhnillahi ta'ala.
And gather you with the most intentional people of all time. The Prophets and the Siddiqoon and the Shuhada. The Ansar across the board. May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala make us amongst them. Jazakum Allahu khayran wa salam alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.
